Stir Pro 1608 Plug Exchange Gate

General Procedure for Setting and Removing Purging Plug In Use With Stir Pro System

  1. Place ladle in horizontal ladle stand

  2. To remove flange assembly:

    • Using the socket wrench, turn the adjuster weldment counter clockwise to lessen pressure on the purging plug.

    • Remove the hairpin cotters from the four (4) wedges. Drive the wedges from the guide pins. The flange can now be removed. Grasp the handles and pull the flange straight back to clear the guide pins. Set the flange assembly aside and out of the way.

  3. Cleaning and Inspecting the Pocket Block:

    • Remove the packing material placed in the pocket block during installation and use air to blow out any remaining debris. Check to insure that the pocket block is seated on the leveling plate and properly aligned. Check the bore of the pocket block to insure that it is free of cracks and has a smooth surface that will mate tightly with the purging plug.

  4. Mortaring the Purging Plug:

    • With the plug held in the vertical position, apply a thin uniform layer (1/8" to 3/16" thick) of mortar on the tapered surface of the plug. A slightly heavier layer (not to exceed 1/2") should be applied to the top 1-1/2" of the plug.

  5. Installing the Purging Plug:

    • The remaining operations must be done quickly. Guide the purging plug forward through the leveling plate bore. insuring that the portion of the purging plug with the mortar does not contact the bore of the leveling plate. Quickly push the purging plug into the pocket block as far as it will go until properly seated.

    • Place the clamping brick over the pipe and seat it against the bottom of the purging plug.

  6. Installing the Flange Assembly:

    • Grasp the handles on the flange assembly, insure that the nut on the adjuster weldment is toward you. Guide the assembly over the four (4) guide pins, push the assembly into position against the alignment plate.

    • Install the four (4) wedges into the four (4) guide pin slots. Insure wedges are installed in the correct direction. Tap each wedge into position with a hammer to seat the flange assembly to alignment plate. Install the four (4) hairpin cotters.

    • Tighten the adjuster weldment clockwise to 75 lb.ft. of torque.

    • Connect the piping to the purge plug.

The unit is now ready for operation.
