Purging Plug Operating Procedure

  1. Do not apply gas pressure to the plug exceeding 180 psi.

  2. Establish a flow meter and back pressure reference points for your particular operation.

  3. Perform a natural gas check to determine the operation readiness of the purging plug immediately after casting. See the procedure for checking the operational readiness of the purging plug.

  4. Between heats look for the safety shape change feature which will indicate when it is time for a plug replacement.

  5. In conjunction with the safety shape feature, the life of the purging plug should be determined by accurately recording the number of stirring minutes on that particular purging plug. Determining the life of the purging plug by the number of heats could be misleading and is not recommended.

  6. Best purging plug stirring practices do not break the slag cover.

  7. The major causes resulting in no stirs are:

    • Failure of gas supplying system (leaks)

    • Skulls

    • Penetration
