Block
Repair
As the plug wears, so
does the block, and repairs to the block should be done at plug
change. While we do not recommend using a block unless ½
the plug is covered, blocks can be safely repaired above this level.
The block can either
be gunned over a dummy or sacrificial plug, or in some cases a repair
mix is dropped over the plug. The dummy plug is removed and installation
of a new plug is as usual. The reason we don't' use a block unless
½ or more is present, is that usually there is not enough
material to hold the plug in the proper position. The reason we
prefer a dummy plug is that these plugs expand under heat, and can
crack while sitting in a hot ladle waiting for repair.
The blocks should always
be inspected for excessive cracks and repaired with good mortar
or plastic before installing the plug.
